The trail down into the cavern was 1 ¼ miles. This brought us to the point in the cave where the elevator is located, and you can walk through ‘The Big Room.’ This section of the cavern is the biggest known cavern in the western hemisphere with roughly 65,000 sq. ft. (over six football fields). We continued our tour by walking the entire Big Room, another 1 ¼ miles. It was definitely interesting but we both felt the Lehman caves we toured on our trip last year were more fun. But then, that was a guided tour and the ranger we had added a lot to the experience with his knowledge and humor.
