After asking the ranger at the visitor center where we would currently find the highest dunes, we headed out to the spot she suggested. When we arrived, there was a family of five taking turns using the purchased sleds while mom or dad filmed the kids sledding down, and then one another. The sand was surprisingly cool, like wet sand, and barefoot was the way to go. Chris made his way up the dune not too far away from the family and got into position. But it soon became apparent that our cardboard ‘sled’ wasn’t gonna' work. It acted like a bulldozer with sand piling up at the front end, going nowhere fast.
To our surprise and delight, the dad from the nearby family noticed our predicament and walked over and offered to loan us one of his sleds. I thanked him profusely and he said, no problem, but they'd only be there for about another 10 minutes. I thanked him again and he tossed the sled as far up the hill toward Chris as he could, Frisbee-style, and walked back to his family. We each just took one turn so that we could return the sled quickly. Short ride, but what a blast!
